Maine Farmland Trust visits D.C.

Westbrook native Brendon Wormell recently spoke in Washington, D.C., with members of Maine’s Congressional delegation and their staffs about agricultural concerns facing state farmers.

Wormell, owner of Wormell Farms in Cumberland, accompanied members of Maine Farmland Trust and other other groups in a trip to the Capitol. He conveyed concerns about “potential cuts to funding and to ask Maine’s elected officials to fight for the programs that have the greatest positive impact for Maine farmers and farmland.”

He produces and markets naturally raised beef.

Winterfest pie baking winners

Melissa Remington captured first place with an apple pie in the Winterfest pie baking contest on March 1.

Florence Guidi finished second with her key lime pie and Gwen Johanning was third with a pecan pie.

The judges were Joe and Sue Salisbury, Heather Chandler, Dan Olchowski and Leif Erickson.

Woman’s Club art show

Westbrook Woman’s Club, of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, will host its annual Westbrook High School Art Show on Tuesday, March 18, at the Community Center, 426 Bridge St.

Westbrook High School art students will compete for first, second and third places with, perhaps, an honorable mention selection.

Roberta Morrill and Ann Newman are art show co-chairs.

Clothes, essentials donations needed

The Christian Mission Outreach Committee of Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St., is hosting a donation drive for the nonprofit I Support the Girls through March.

The outreach committee collects and distribute essential items including bras, new underwear and menstrual products to women and folks experiencing homelessness, poverty and distress.

I Support the Girls accepts all gently used bra types – sports bras, nursing bras, maternity bras, training bras, lacy bras, and more.

A donation bin is located in the church’s fellowship hall. An information sheet answering frequently asked questions is available on the bulletin board.

Historical talk on auto racing

Auto racing historian Steve Pellerin will talk about the former Beech Ridge Speedway when Westbrook Historical Society meets at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, in the Oak Room in Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.

The meeting will include a 50/50 raffle and refreshments. The program was originally planned for March 1.

Free Redwood Society activities

Senior citizens regularly have a slate of free activities from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Redwood Room at Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.

Bingo Blitz is set for Friday, March 14; Team Trivia, March 17; Family Feud game show, March 18; and Cribbage Club, March 19.
