William Frey Taylor

TOPSHAM – William Frey Taylor born on June 25, 1922 in Portland, the son of Neil R. and Helen V. Taylor. He attended Falmouth schools, graduated from Englewood School for Boys in Englewood, N.J. He earned his Eagle badge from Boy Scouts. He graduated from Yale University followed by Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons where he received his medical degree in 1948. He interned at The Maine General Hospital now called Maine Medical Center.

He served for two years in the Navy, most of which was sea duty on Navy troop transports. At one point, his ship was in Eniwetok for two months where he witnessed several atomic test bomb explosions, including one awesome hydrogen bomb explosion.

He established a medical practice in Falmouth, Maine and continued there for 38 years. He was the Town of Falmouth’s school physician.

He joined Partners for Progress, a program initiated by President Kennedy to foster good will between the Americas. The Lion’s Club of Falmouth proclaimed him as Citizen of the Year in 1965.

He met his wife, Maggie Smith, through a windsurf club in Portland.

During his winter months in Florida, Bill was active with the soup kitchen, and became an ombudsmen checking on the health care of nursing home residents.

Bill’s first wife, Barbara (Winter) died in 1973. He was also married for a short time to Helene Mathurine. His beloved wife, Maggie, died in 2011.

Bill leaves behind six children, Avrio, Nancy Burnette and husband Reb, Martha Speed and husband Jud, Sarah Leclair and husband Andy, Peter, Ruth Kiakidis and husband Michael; and many grandchildren; great-children; nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held this summer.
