Middle school hosts Ohio author
Gorham Middle School librarian Suzanne Dix wrote in an email to Westbrook-Gorham Now that author Margaret Peterson Haddix spoke to teachers and students at the school April 16 during Spirit Week and before vacation.
“In the audience were Harry Potters, Little Red Riding Hoods and many a character from the Percy Jackson series,” Dix wrote.
“Ms. Haddix stole the show with her stories of how she came up with ideas for her 50-plus novels, particularly including three of the novels the Gorham Middle School Book Club recently read and discussed.”
Haddix, Dix said, was gracious, funny and answered “countless questions” about her career as an author. Dix said Haddix also shared that she had the best lobster of her life at a Luke’s Lobster location.
“Ms. Haddix stayed after her presentations to have lunch with the book club and several teachers,” Dix said. “Students truly appreciated that Ms. Haddix traveled from Ohio to be here in Gorham and her novels, already popular, will no doubt fly off the shelves.”
Gorham to hold history walk
The community’s first “Jane’s Walk” is set for 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, to hear about buildings and places in the South Street Historic District.
The walk, a 90-minute, narrated tour, will commence on the lawn at the Baxter House Museum, adjacent to Baxter Memorial Library, 71 South St. The tour will include a stop for refreshments at PineCrest Inn.
“Jane’s Walk is a global festival of free, volunteer-led walking conversation inspired by community activist Jane Jacobs, who advocated for people to learn about their communities,” a Facebook posting said.
Registration for the walk is not required. The walk will be held rain or shine.
Gorham Historical Society, Greater Portland Landmarks, Gorham High School History Department and the Gorham Village Alliance are sponsoring the event.
