Peter A. Lowe
DURHAM – Peter A. Lowe, 85, of Durham, passed away tragically on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2025.
Peter was the son of Harrison and Helen Lowe, who preceded him in death. He built a long and meaningful life defined by dedication, service, and love for his family and community.
Peter devoted 52 years of volunteer service to the Durham Fire Department, a commitment that became one of the great honors of his life. His steady presence, reliability, and courage made him a respected and valued member of the department for more than half a century.
His working years were marked by dedication and loyalty. Peter began his career at Commonwealth Shoe in Freeport, where he met the love of his life, Kathleen. He later spent more than 20 years with L.L. Bean, and upon taking early retirement, worked alongside Kathleen in her sewing business until its closure in 2020.
Peter loved the outdoors and spent countless hours practicing selective cutting to help the forests thrive. He and Kathleen enjoyed many winters volunteering with the Maine Adaptive Ski Program at Sunday River, a passion that brought joy and purpose to their retirement years. He was an avid traveler, visiting Alaska, Newfoundland, and skiing out west, and summers were spent at the family’s cottage in Brooklin, Maine. There, Peter shared his love of sailing upon his family’s boat, RESPITE, on Eggemoggin Reach. In more recent years, he embraced life’s pleasures to the fullest riding his Can-Am.
Peter is survived by his wife of 62 years, Kathleen; his brother John and wife Vicki of Freeport; his daughter Elizabeth and husband Tim of Shrewsbury, Mass. and his son Andrew and wife Misty of Nottingham, NH.
He was a proud grandfather to Natalya, Ian, Noah, Taylor, Haley, and Caleb, and a delighted great-grandfather to Landon, Abel, Eleanor, Scarlett, and a soon-to-arrive little one affectionately known as a “Cutie Venuti,” whose arrival he eagerly anticipated.
Peter also cherished time spent with many in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends both near and far, who held special places in his heart.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and a man whose life reflected a deep commitment to family, community, and the natural world.
A service of remembrance and celebration will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 11 a.m. at the Shiloh Church in Durham, Maine. The service will also be live-streamed for those unable to attend.
The family requests no flowers.
