Douglas S. Hathaway

SACO – Douglas S. Hathaway, 83, passed peacefully at Seal Rock Healthcare in Saco on Nov. 14, 2025, after a long illness.

Doug was born in Yarmouth on May 5, 1942, at Gilbert’s Hospital to Lorrimer Shepley Hathaway and Phyllis R. (Dearborn) Hathaway of Yarmouth. Doug attended Yarmouth schools, was a 1960 graduate of North Yarmouth Academy and a 1969 graduate of the University of Maine. He was a member of Phi Mu Delta Fraternity, and played on the basketball and track teams in college.

An ardent sports enthusiast, Doug watched his two daughters, Lisa and Kristen, excel as Yarmouth High School athletes and followed Yarmouth High School’s basketball program for years. Doug and his wife, Barb, followed Greely basketball and often attended the home games in Cumberland.

Doug was a Northern New England territory sales manager for John Morrell & Co. of Sioux Falls, S.D. for 25 years. After his years with John Morrell, Doug worked for various meat and food service companies. He had extensive experience within all facets of the food industry: managing a $3-plus million sales territory, training new sales personnel, selling to and servicing five major military commissaries, creating and developing over 250 new accounts, and he was a Certified Angus Beef specialist.

Doug was always a beloved member of the community, known for his exuberance, enthusiasm, humor and vast knowledge of endless topics. His life took a meaningful turn when he came to know and love Jesus and became devoted to his faith. The years that followed found him dedicating his time to helping others and mentoring children and young adults. The gifts he gave to others are immeasurable. Living his retirement years in Cumberland, Doug continued to fill his days with service. He volunteered as a driver for the Regional Transportation Program (RTP), was a deacon at his church, and mentored/tutored young people at the Root Cellar in Portland.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents Lorrimer and Phyllis Hathaway.

He is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Barbara (VanTwisk) Hathaway; his daughters Lisa Hathaway, Kristen (Stephen) Stills and their children Henry Stills, Oliver Stills, Justin Stills, Jennifer Stills, Christopher Stills, Eleanor Stills, Alexandra Stills; his brother, Bruce Hathaway; his nephew, Brett Hathaway; his stepchildren Mellyn (Stephen) Shurtleff, Heather (Douglas) Amundson, Austin (Jennifer) Ganly and their children Caleb Amundson, Hannah Trott, Nicholas Shurtleff, Eric Shurtleff, Elizabeth Shurtleff, Elizabeth Amundson, Esther Amundson, Caroline Ganly and Ella Ganly.

The family would like to express its deepest gratitude to the staff at Seal Rock Healthcare, Hospice of Southern Maine, and to the many people and pets who gave unending support and comfort to both Doug and the family.

A celebration of life will be held at Community of Grace Church, 355 Bridgton Rd., Westbrook, on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 11 a.m.
