Rev. Leslie Pettit

BERWICK – Rev. Les Pettit died peacefully on December 2, 2025 at home, after a long period of declining health. He was born in New Jersey December 7, 1943 to Arch and Gloria Pettit. He graduated from The University of Maine, Orono and Bangor Theological Seminary, serving United Methodist Churches in Maine and Massachusetts. He was known for his innovative worship services especially during Holy Week and Easter.

Upon Les’ retirement, Bishop Peter Weaver wrote, “I particularly celebrate his worship leadership and preaching and the strong pastoral care that he offers so abundantly. Les’ deep commitment to the ministry of the local church and within the conference have long been evident.”

Always a proponent of youth, he oversaw the United Methodist Church’s Basketball League, taught Sunday school and coached soccer for many years. In addition, he was an umpire for scholastic as well as Little League games, including umpiring numerous Little League All Star games.

Rev. Pettit enjoyed reading historical and sports books. He also enjoyed traveling, visiting many National Parks and historic sites throughout the United States including Alaska. In addition, he visited Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, England, France, Switzerland, Italy and Israel.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Gail (Rupert) Pettit, sons Steven Pettit and his wife Domenica Spiteri, South Berwick, Gerald Pettit and his wife Jennifer Martel Pettit, Parsonsfield, and adopted son Daniel Pettit, Bridgeport, Conn.

In addition he is survived by three granddaughters, Jane (and husband, Josh), Lilia (and wife, Elena), and Maya and two step granddaughters, Devin and Madeline, and one great granddaughter, Niyah, as well as a brother Robert Pettit and his wife Mary Pettit, North Augusta, S.C., and step sister, Harriet Whiteman, Maplewood, N.J.

Calling hours will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Tuesday, December 9, at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 28 Cataract Avenue, Dover, NH, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 am at the church.
