Shelby W. Putnam
SCARBOROUGH – Shelby W. Putnam, 91, of Scarborough, passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 15, 2025. He was born on April 17,1934 in Medford, Mass., the only child of Francis M. And Katherine (Hill) Putnam. Shelby was a graduate of Gould Academy and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He married Harris MacDonald on September 3, 1955.
Upon completion of two years of service in the U.S. Navy, Shelby began his engineering career. In 1970 he and Harris became the third owners of Havens Candy Kitchen and he embarked upon his second career as a manufacturing confectioner.
Shelby was a proud father to his three children to whom he passed along his love of boating and Chebeague Island. Summers were spent on Chebeague with countless hours navigating the waters of coastal Maine. Upon retirement, Shelby and Harris traveled by boat on the waters from Maine to Florida and the Bahamas for four years, always returning to Chebeague by Memorial Day weekend!
Shelby is survived by his sons, William G. and wife Julie (Legere), Robert M. and wife Lori (Cannon), and daughter Jennifer H. and husband Ian Cummings. He is also survived by a large extended family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His family will honor him with a memorial service on a date to be determined at the Chebeague Island Cemetery.
