‘Peabody Pew’ production not returning

The annual Dorcas Society of Hollis and Buxton stage production of the “Old Peabody Pew” had its last curtain call in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic and won’t return.

“We tried a couple of times and it didn’t draw enough of a crowd to make it work,” Dorcas Society President Catherine Lamson responded recently to a question on Facebook. “The younger crowds didn’t understand the humor of it and the cast spent two months practicing every week and were disappointed in the outcome. We had to let it go.”

The Dorcas Society had presented the Christmastime two-act romantic comedy annually at Tory Hill Church in Buxton. It was written by the local Dorcas Society founder Kate Douglas Wiggin in 1907. It was adapted in 1916 for a stage performance in the church and in 2018 took on a modern twist.

The Dorcas Society, a charitable and literary group founded by Wiggin in 1897, remains active.
