Bombay Bistro recently opened in Westbrook in the Bridge Street space that former housed longstanding gastropub Frog & Turtle.

The roughly 5,000-square-foot space can seat about 140 customers, including on the second floor that Bombay Bistro is reserving as event space.

Co-owner Antonio Kanickaraj said Bombay Bistro specializes in “modern Indian cuisine.”

“There are very few restaurants in Portland, Westbrook and surrounding cities where authentic Indian food is being served,” said Kanickaraj, a restaurant industry veteran with more than two decades of experience. Kanickaraj divides his time between Maine and Los Angeles, where he owns three restaurants. “We have dishes that you’ll seldom find in other Indian restaurants, at least in Maine.”

Kanickeraj said Bombay Bistro’s less common dishes include kheema pav (minced lamb served with soft bread); truffle malai chicken tikka; and peshawari naan stuffed with dried fruits. The dessert list includes a carrot halwa served on a hot skillet and topped with butterscotch ice cream.

Bombay Bistro also includes some fusion touches, like their selection of Indian pizzas. The venue does not currently serve alcohol, though it may in the future. The beverage offerings include a variety of Indian-inflected mocktails including a masala mojito and a guava green chili smash.

Bombay Bistro is open at 3 Bridge St. Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The restaurant also serves a lunch buffet from 12-3 p.m. The buffet features dishes not on the a la carte menu, and the buffet offerings change daily.
