Elmer Berry
SCARBOROUGH – Major Elmer Berry, 95, was Promoted to Glory on Jan. 19, 2026, from Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.
He was born in East Boston, Mass., on Dec. 20, 1930, the son of William and Ida Simons Berry.
As a young man, he served in the Air National Guard. Elmer entered the Salvation Army School for Officer Training and completed his studies in the ministry. His love of photography led him to studies in X Ray Technology and Nuclear Medicine. He completed his Bachelor of Science at Manhattan University in the Bronx.
Elmer married Lt. Monica Marshia, the love of his life. Together, they were stationed for most of their married career at the Booth Memorial Medical Center in Flushing, N.Y. They ministered to the sick for over 30 years.
He was predeceased by his parents, his daughter Marsha Lynne Pagan in 2009 and his wife Major Monica Marshia Berry in 2016, and his siblings William, George, Margaret, Rozela and Marion.
He is survived by his daughter Dr. Cathy Jean Berry Lozoponi and her husband Nicholas of Syracuse, N.Y., two grandchildren, Nicholas Joseph Lozoponi and Celeste Cathleen Pagan, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service will be held in May of 2026 at the Salvation Army Corp, 2 Sixth Street, Old Orchard Beach. His burial will take place at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, N.Y., where he will be reunited with his wife Major Monica Berry. Dennett, Craig and Pate Funeral Home, Saco has been entrusted with his arrangements.
