Elizabeth Jean Clark

FREEPORT – Elizabeth Jean Clark, known as “Betty,” went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 26, 2026, after a long illness.

She was born in Lewiston, on Nov. 3, 1940, the adopted daughter of Clarence and Florence Coombs. She was educated in Freeport schools and graduated from Freeport High School with the class of 1959. Following high school, she attended medical school, and in 1962, she received her diploma at the School of Nursing at Maine Medical Center. Then in 1963, she became certified as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Maine State Board of Nursing. On Oct. 6, 1962, she married the love of her life – whom she met through people she knew at First Baptist Church in Freeport – Ralph H. Clark. They were married for 48 years.

The couple made their home in Freeport where they raised two daughters. She worked for several doctors through the years in Freeport and Brunswick, along with seasonal employment at L. L. Bean. She and her husband were longtime members of First Baptist Church in Freeport, and then they spent their remaining years at First Parish Congregational Church in Pownal. She served as pianist and organist for over 50 years, beginning as a child in the Freeport church, and blessing others with her musical gifts through the decades.

She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, cross-stitch, gardening and yard work. She and her husband also enjoyed travelling, making visits to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Belgium, as well as two trips to Senegal, West Africa, to visit their daughter Lois who served with Ethnos360 (formerly New Tribes Mission). They also made several trips to Wisconsin to visit their daughter Ruth. Betty demonstrated a strong faith in the Lord and faithfully prayed for her family. She was preceded in death by her adoptive parents and by her husband. She is survived by her older daughter Ruth Clark, who now resides in Richmond, and her younger daughter Lois Clark, who returned to Freeport from Senegal in 2022.

A Celebration-of-Life service will be held at the First Parish Congregational Church in Pownal, Maine at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7.
