Capt. Martin T. Macisso Jr.

PORTLAND – Capt. Martin T. Macisso Jr., 95, passed away on Feb. 6, 2026, at his home in Portland. Marty was born on Aug. 27, 1930, in Portland, son of the late Martin Macisso and Christina (Cairns) Shaw.

Marty was educated in Portland Schools and attended Cheverus High School. He enlisted in the Navy after high school. Upon his return, he met the love of his life, Joan. They raised six children on Munjoy Hill. Joan and Marty loved to travel, whether it was their annual bus trips to Quebec or their travels around Europe.

Marty worked for 20 years with the Portland Fire Department where he worked his way up through the ranks to Captain. He had many other jobs throughout his life, most notably the family business, Eastern Book Company and Hannaford. He particularly enjoyed meeting and chatting with people while working at Hannaford. He was a communicant and usher for many years at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

He had a special appreciation for Bruno’s Restaurant and Tavern, where he had his favorite table and waitress, Susan Geary – he always ordered Eggplant parm, side salad and a glass of Shiraz.

Later, after retiring for the final time, he volunteered to help Joan look after several grandchildren. To all of them, they were known as Nana and Papa. Always making time for them, including the summers when Joan and Marty would have them write up activity lists for the season. Scratching each off one by one.

In his own way, he was so proud of all his children and grandchildren. Even if he didn’t tell them directly, he always spoke well of them to others. In his later years, he would take his son, Marty out for “business” drives around Portland.

Marty’s great advice and many humorous dry anecdotes will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Marty was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Joan (Lamon) Macisso; siblings, Vincent Marcisso, Joseph Macisso, and Geraldine Bartholomew; and numerous aunts and uncles. He is survived by his children, Martin T. Macisso III, Stephen and his wife Francine Macisso, John and his wife Maureen Macisso, Michael and his wife Lynnda Tibbetts Macisso, Jean and her husband Scott Proctor, and Elizabeth Macisso; grandchildren, Stephen Jr., Casey and her husband Christopher Kondik, Christopher and his wife Hannah Macisso, James and his wife Lindsay Macisso, Michael Macisso and his partner Olivia Spinale, Dante and his wife Jillian Macisso, Joseph and his wife Lauren Macisso, Lindsey Proctor and her partner John Marquis, Ryan Proctor and his partner Samantha Cash, and Patrick Skibiski; great-grandchildren, Shea Kondik, Ava, Owen, Natalie, Maisy, Leo, Luci, Jones, Oscar, and Mason Macisso, and Marlo Marquis; brother, Samuel and his wife Jacqueline Marcisso; goddaughter, Christina Young; and many beloved extended family members.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 4 – 8 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2026, at the New Conroy-Tully Walker Cremation, Funeral, & Gathering Center, 300 Allen Ave., Portland.
