Virginia Stevens Verrill
OQUOSSOC/NASHUA, N.H. – Virginia Stevens Verrill, 97, passed away peacefully on Jan. 20, 2026.
She was born in Canton Point, Maine, on Oct. 15, 1928, to A. Herbert and Gladys (Parlin) Stevens, the eighth of 10 children. She graduated from Canton High School at 16 and took a summer course in preparation to teach in a one-room schoolhouse in Meadowview, Maine.
Virginia attended Farmington State Normal School and earned a degree in Home Economics before teaching in South Portland for three years and Rangeley for 25 years. Virginia met her husband Roger at a high school basketball game. They soon married, lived in downtown Oquossoc and raised their two children, Bruce and Brenda. They owned Roger’s Market and were actively involved in all corners of the community.
Retiring in 1976, they spent their winters in Estero, Fla., and summers along the Oquossoc Cove of Rangeley Lake. Virginia was an avid seamstress who enjoyed patchwork, quilting, and making clothes. After Roger passed away, she moved to Nashua, N.H. to be near her daughter’s family. Until the age of 96, she continued to make crazy lap quilts for the “old folks”, beautiful baby quilts for loved ones, and altered clothing for many. She enjoyed the good side of Facebook, connecting with family, friends, and former students, always wanting to know the “who, what, where, when” of a posting.
She truly lived until she died, exchanging little acts of kindness with family and friends. Virginia led her life with determination, wisdom, and care for others. She would want us to carry on with kindness, reach out to those near and far, and think of her when using a skill from Home Ec.
She is survived by her daughter, Brenda and favorite son-in-law, Gary Wingate; granddaughters Katherine Wingate Tarantino (husband Joseph and great-granddaughters Olivia and Julia), Lauren Wingate Murphy (husband James and great-grandson Bennett), and Natalie Rose Wingate (partner Jarred Garneau); sisters-in-law, Bernice Stevens and Eleanor Verrill Smith; nieces, nephews, and friends around the country.
She was predeceased by her husband, Roger Verrill; son, Bruce Verrill; parents A. Herbert and Gladys (Parlin) Stevens; and nine siblings, John, Wilmer, Frederick, Richard, A.H., Robert, Amos, Ruth Norris, and Alice Smith.
