NORTH BERWICK – Our beloved mother, Margaret Marie “Peg” (Erker) Cheever, died peacefully on March 16, 2026, surrounded by her family after a brief, but very brave, battle with brain cancer.
Peg was spirited, highly intelligent, quick to laugh, and loved a fun adventure. Born in 1944 in Staten Island, N.Y., she grew up all over the country. Her father, Frank L. Erker, was in the U.S. Coast Guard, which meant several cross-country car trips as a young girl with just her elder sister, Elizabeth Rooney, and mother, Alma Locke Erker. Peg attended high school in Wakefield, Mass., and the Malden Hospital School of Nursing. As a Registered Nurse, she spent decades working in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, and continued to care for those around her after retiring. Having raised her family in Lynnfield, Mass., Peg ultimately retired to North Berwick, Maine. For more than 50 years she spent every summer at her beloved camp at Lakeside Pines Campground on Long Lake in Bridgton. Peg loved campfires, dining out with her lunch club friends, knitting, and puzzles.
Peg’s husband, Carl Irwin “Chip” Cheever, predeceased her.
She is survived by her daughter, Kirsten of Sanford, her son, Douglas and his wife, Pam, of West Paris, her daughter, Michelle and her husband, Kevin Kilgore, of Casco, and her son, Andrew and his wife, Lisa, of North Berwick. Her cherished grandchildren, Scott, Alec, Ryan, Matthew, Dalton, Chandra, and Samantha; as well as her four great-grandchildren, brought great joy to her life. Peg and her sister, Elizabeth, of Merchantville, N.J., became extremely close over the years and shared a love of travel.
We love you, Mom, and know that somewhere you are enjoying a roaring campfire as Dad is chopping wood, and you are both looking out at the lake together.
