Susan Cassidy, of Standish, and her daughter Randee Cassidy, of Sebago, teamed up to produce a recently published children’s activity book. Sue is a retired college educator and Randee is an instructional coach at Buxton Center Elementary School and a literacy/curriculum instructor at the University of Southern Maine.

They answered these questions about their book:

What inspired you to produce this book?

The inspiration was simple. While sitting around a few campfires with a then-6-year-old who was bored, we started talking about the various outdoor nature activities that she could do if we had only brought a few supplies to help us out. As we did this, we said, “We should be writing this down.” Thus, the beginning of the draft. We had been talking about writing a book together, and this just seemed … natural. It is loaded with ideas and lists that should help prepare for a camping trip with kids.

The name “Ladybugs” comes from the nickname that I have for the now-7-year-old, Randee’s daughter, Remi Lyn, and Ellie is my older granddaughter.

What age bracket is this book intended for reading?

The age range is 4-12, with adult interaction. It is designed as an educational activity book that engages kids with their adults without electronics.

Is this your first book?

Yes, it is the first book for both of us. It’s been very much a learning journey. We really worked hard to create a book that can be used fully through reading, writing, creating and taking with them into the outdoors while camping. Even the pages and cover are of thicker stock to withstand the outdoors. We plan to follow it up with another in the “Ladybugs and Ellie” series.

Who is the illustrator and how did you meet or contact them?

We published the book through Maine Authors Publishing located in Thomaston. They handle Maine authors exclusively and have guided us all the way and still are. The illustrator is Alyssa Willey from Warren. She contracts through Maine Authors. Though we have not met in person, she worked closely with us in character and scene development. The story really pops out in the illustrations. We are very happy with the end results.

Is this book used in classrooms now?

The book is being considered by a local second grade, and as it meets several literacy standards, we are in hopes that others will also purchase it for classroom use.

What has been the public response?

The public response has been extremely favorable. We look forward to getting the book out into bookstores and campgrounds.

Have you visited libraries to tell the story of your book?

As it is a seasonal-themed book, we are in the process of setting up readings and author signings. We are excited to get out there and also have an activity program to go along with the readings.

Where can people buy it? How much?

It costs $22.95 and is available on Amazon or at Maine Authors Publishing, maineauthorspublishing.com.
