Wendy Weiler has spent her entire adult life in Saco. Following a 40-year career in healthcare, Weiler now sits on the board of local nonprofits Saco Main Street and Saco Bay Trails. She’s also a member of the community choir Voices in Harmony.
What do you like to eat?
Finestkind is a welcomed addition to bustling Pepperell Square with a bright, warm and welcoming atmosphere. I’m making my way through the evolving menu. Two favorites include a farro salad with roasted vegetables and the fried chicken biscuit sandwich. As the weather improves, I intend to enjoy a Tandem coffee and a brioche donut on the outside seating area as the Downeaster passes through town.
Where do you like to have something to drink?
Located on Main Street is Up and Up cocktail lounge, Saco’s own speakeasy-like, cozy, retro-themed bar. Play a vintage video game or play a board game while enjoying free popcorn and a signature cocktail. I’ve sampled a maple old fashioned and settled into a comfy couch surrounded by friends and great conversation. If I time it right in the summer months, I’ll enjoy my favorite beverage on the outdoor balcony and take in an evening of Music on Main by a local performer.
Where do you go to connect with nature?
As someone who is drawn to the water, Saco offers a trifecta. Bayview Beach is my favorite spot. Whether it’s an early morning walk at low tide, or waiting for the full moon to appear, it never disappoints. Cascade Falls is another favorite spot to visit. It offers a 20-foot waterfall which proves to be quite spectacular in the spring following snow melt. I love Fairy House Building Day each July, when families explore the trails and recognize the beauty in our backyard. Thirdly, the newly transformed Riverfront Park is an easy walk from my home and downtown. It’s a green oasis, combining industrial history and natural beauty, connecting the community directly to the water. It provides a great view of Cataract East Channel Dam, sometimes including an unexpected spray from the Saco River. I can’t wait to pack a picnic and grab an Adirondack chair in the pollinator garden.
Where do you like to shop?
Located in the historic Atkinson building on Main Street is Maybe’s. They offer fresh flowers, houseplants and local artist-made gifts, all with a whimsical flair.
What are some hidden gems in Saco?
The Dyer Library and Saco Museum combine a public library and a museum offering community, history and art under one umbrella. A variety of programs are offered throughout the year for young and old. One favorite is The Festival Of Trees. Most recently, I attended a book signing by a local author sharing his adventures of the Appalachian Trail. The current exhibition, “Cultivating Creativity: Works By Art Educators” is a must-see. I follow their event calendars faithfully.
