Hobby Lobby plans to open a location in Brunswick this summer after signing a lease for the space formerly occupied by Sears in Cook’s Corner.

A spokesperson for the company confirmed in an email Monday that the arts and crafts store will soon be opening a location on Gurnet Road next to the Dollar Tree.

The new location will be located in the former Sears store, the anchor of the Cook’s Corner mall since 1966. The Brunswick Sears has been vacant since its liquidation and closure in 2020.

Hobby Lobby will only take up a portion of the former Sears space, which totaled 82,000 square feet. The remainder of the space not leased by Hobby Lobby is still listed for lease through the Boulos Company.

Founded in Oklahoma in 1970 with Christianity as a core business principle, Hobby Lobby now operates more than 1,000 craft and decor stores nationwide and employs about 50,000 people across 48 states, according to the company.

There are currently four Hobby Lobby locations in Maine: in Bangor, Waterville, Augusta and Auburn.
