Large vessels won’t be able to pass through The Casco Bay Bridge on Wednesday while the Maine Department of Transportation conducts routine maintenance.
The bridge connecting Portland and South Portland will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday to vessels that require the bridge to open to pass through, the Portland Harbor Master’s Office announced in a social media post on Monday.
Smaller vessels will still be able to pass under the bridge during the closure, according to the harbor master’s office.
Mariners can contact the bridge operator for more information at 207-592-2846 or VHF CH 13.
At 4,748 feet long, the Casco Bay Bridge is the longest in Maine and is the second-largest overall, with a deck area of 407,378 square feet.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
