Speed limits on the Maine Turnpike were reduced to 45 mph Tuesday as a spring snow fell on parts of Maine.

The Maine Turnpike Authority said in an alert that limits were temporarily reduced between Saco (Exit 36) and the New Hampshire state line at the request of Maine State Police.

Overlimit vehicles are also temporarily prohibited from driving on that stretch of the turnpike.

The National Weather Service forecast anywhere from a dusting to 1-2 inches of snow in some areas of southern and central Maine, with flakes starting Tuesday morning in the south and expected to move north toward the Augusta area by midafternoon.

Interior areas, including Oxford County and northern Androscoggin, Cumberland and York Counties, were expected to see the most snow.

But it won’t last long, with most of the state forecast to see more springlike temperatures back into the 40s and 50s on Wednesday and Thursday, which should quickly melt any accumulation.
