The battery storage farm in Gorham Industrial Park is not excluded from the town’s tax roles as some recent rumors have claimed.
“The facility does pay taxes,” Town Manager Ephrem Paraschak said in an April 7 email.
Cross Town Energy Storage LLC, owned by Plus Power in Texas, went online earlier this year at 61 Hutcherson Drive in Gorham Industrial Park. The lithium-ion battery system stores electrical power from the grid during non-peak hours and makes it available as a reserve during high-demand times for energy. The battery farm is located adjacent to Central Maine Power’s Mosher substation.
The town taxes the real estate. In a tax listing on the town’s website, the personal property value of batteries is assessed at $85.6 million, but the entire amount is exempted under Maine law, stating the town cannot tax the facility for its personal property. However, the state reimburses Gorham for half of the lost personal property tax revenue.
The batteries are included under the state’s Business Equipment Tax Exemption Program. “Under the BETE program, eligible equipment for the owner is exempted from taxes and the state reimburses the municipality for half of the lost revenue,” Paraschak said.
The town taxed the battery farm $698,598.48 for real estate in the 2025-26 fiscal year, according to town tax records posted online. The 13.2-acre Gorham site that Cross Town Energy Storage bought in 2023 for $850,000 is now assessed at $47.2 million.
The Gorham tax rate for the 2025-26 year is $14.80 per 1,000 of valuation.
