South Portland elementary school reconfiguration may not occur by September.
The school board may vote in two weeks on whether to slow down the reconfiguration process of the district’s elementary schools, according to school board Chair Rosemarie De Angelis.
The board scheduled a special meeting for April 29, allowing for sufficient public notice and time to draft the action item, De Angelis said.
Two weeks ago, the board voted to close James O. Kaler Elementary School and reconfigure the remaining four elementary schools by grade-level groups.
The board has been receiving feedback from the community urging members to slow the process, she said.
School board Members Eleni Richardson and Tyler Smith will serve on a committee that will work with representatives from all schools, regardless of the new time frame.
“The focus at this point is on Kaler,” De Angelis said.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
