Two candidates, Joseph Paul and Susan Brawn, are vying for an Area 2 seat on the Standish Town Council now held by board Chair John Gardner, who did not submit nomination papers that were due April 13.

“When I first decided to run, my intention was to serve one term unless I felt there was a strong reason to continue,” Gardner said in an email. “Over the past three years, it has truly been an honor to serve the town, and I’ve appreciated the opportunity to be involved and contribute in a meaningful way. At this point, I feel proud of the work that’s been accomplished during my term, and I believe it’s the right time for me to step back and allow space for new perspectives and leadership. I’m also looking forward to pursuing other opportunities and focusing on different areas where I can continue to make an impact. I’ve genuinely enjoyed the experience and am grateful for the support from the community throughout my time in office.”

In Area 4, Brian Libby is challenging incumbent Robert Deakin; and Benjamin Macri and Robert McFerren are each hoping to succeed incumbent Phil Pomerleau, who did not file papers for his at-large seat.

Pomerleau and Isabel Higgins both filed nomination papers for a seat on the town’s planning board in Area 1. Carolyn Biegel is not seeking reelection for that seat. No one filed for an Area 3 seat now held by Patrick Gere. Frank Nappi, current vice chair, is running unopposed for his at-large planning board seat.

All Town Council and planning board seats are for three-year terms expiring in 2029.

There are three at-large budget committee openings. Heidi Watson is the lone candidate for one of two, three-year at-large seats expiring in 2029 while no one is running for the other. Christopher Finley is unchallenged for an available two-year seat expiring in 2028.
