A Biddeford man was killed in a head-on collision between his motorcycle and an SUV in Saco on Friday morning.

Police say 52-year-old Michael Petersen was driving a gray Harley-Davidson motorcycle northbound on U.S. Route 1 in Saco just before 7 a.m. when he attempted to pass a tractor-trailer that was making a right turn.

Petersen crossed the double yellow center lines and collided head-on with a red Chevy Equinox that was driving south, according to a news release from the Saco Police Department.

Both Petersen and the SUV driver were taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where Petersen was pronounced dead.

The driver of the SUV, a 53-year-old Saco resident, suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to police.

Saco police say the investigation is ongoing.

The crash closed a portion of Route 1 for much of Friday morning while police from Saco and Kennebunk responded.
