Staff at Space in Portland are joining a union that represents workers at cultural organizations, staff and management announced Friday.
Space staff members will join the United Auto Workers Local 2110 Technical, Office, and Professional Union, which represents workers in museums, cultural institutions, publishing and education. Twenty-one full and part-time employees of the nonprofit organization will be represented, including administrative and event staff, according to a release from Space.
The effort to unionize was “unanimously supported” by Space workers, according to the release, and was voluntarily recognized by the board of directors and Executive Director Kelsey Halliday Johnson. In the release, Johnson said Space management looks forward to working with the union.
“I admire everyone involved with Space and the staff’s care, intention, and solidarity,” Johnson said. “We look forward to working together to ensure our workplace reflects shared values of creativity, equity, and mutual respect that each of us brings to our daily work.”
Space is a nonprofit arts institution and venue that hosts art exhibitions, artist talks, film screenings, music performances and art-related events. It is one of the venues for the All Roads Music Festival being held in Portland on May 15-16.
Space workers are joining the same union that represents staff at the Portland Museum of Art, as well as several other museums around the Northeast, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Mass MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts.
The decision to join the union was prompted by the “institutional values and principles” at Space and seen as a natural step forward for the 25-year-old nonprofit arts organization, according to the release, which was signed by the 21 employees.
