Chad Poitras is moving up from second in command at the South Buxton Cemetery Association. He succeeds Richard “Sandy” Atkinson, who served 20 years as president of the organization. Atkinson wrapped up his tenure on April 22 and said in an email that he’s leaving the cemetery in capable hands.

“They have an excellent team,” he said.

We asked Poitras questions about his role as president:

What is the process for becoming president?

The president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and board member openings or renewals are voted on every year at the annual cemetery proprietor’s meeting.

Is this a volunteer position?

The president and all board member positions are completely voluntary with no compensation.

Do you anticipate any changes or additions to the day-by-day operation?

No changes are planned. Sandy was such a great president, the organization runs smoothly as it is. Sandy left us in a great spot during this transition.

Are lots available and what is the cost?

We have plenty of lots available for purchase. Most are in the newer Woodman Section and the eventual Atkinson Section. Graves start at around $1,500 and there are veteran discount options.

How many employees does the cemetery have and their job descriptions?

The cemetery has a superintendent, who is a working superintendent that oversees the other three or four part-time workers who are responsible for maintenance of the grounds and equipment and preparing graves.

What are a few of the most notable graves or memorials in the cemetery?

The monument for Kate Douglas Wiggin, along with numerous monuments of early town families and entrepreneurs.

How many war veterans are buried there?

We have around 5,200 burials at the cemetery with nearly 600 of them being veterans.

Would the cemetery be eligible for national historic register recognition?

The cemetery could be registered, but there are a lot of architectural requirements and potential stipulations for this process.

What are the biggest challenges you face at the cemetery?

In my opinion, the biggest challenge is managing the increase of costs to operate the cemetery to keep it as beautiful as possible against keeping the price reasonable for people to inter loved ones at the cemetery. Increases in fuel prices, insurances and wages to enable workers to have a livable wage have significantly increased overhead costs.

We have a great crew of people on the grounds who are doing the best they can to maintain the cemetery to its great condition. We plan to offer continued options for interments to meet the community’s needs.

How may people contact you?

At the cemetery office, 929-4773, or 929-3723, if needed; and email [email protected].
