PORTLAND — Police are investigating the death Monday of an employee at a nonprofit residential facility near the intersection of Woodford Street and Rosemont Avenue.

Shalom House confirmed Monday evening that an employee died in “a tragic incident this morning involving violence.”

“Our deepest condolences and thoughts are with our employee’s family and her large community of friends, which includes her Shalom House community,” the organization said in a statement it released through its attorney. “Our immediate focus is the well being of her family, our employees and our clients.”

Residents of the group home run by the nonprofit at 503 Woodford St. were evacuated just before noon after authorities said an incident occurred inside.

Portland police said in a brief news release Monday afternoon that there is no danger to the public, but they did not say who died or how, or whether anyone had been taken into custody in connection with the death. A neighbor told a reporter that they saw police apparently apprehend one person.

Detectives and evidence technicians were processing the scene, police spokesperson Brad Nadeau said, and more information will be released as the investigation progresses.

Police responded just before 11 a.m. to what they initially described as a “large crime scene” near Woodford Street’s intersection with Rosemont Avenue, just off Brighton Avenue. Police Chief Mark Dubois, who was at the scene, declined to confirm what happened and said more information would be released later in the day.

The police department’s crime scene van and several cruisers blocked part of Woodford Street for hours Monday as officers interviewed residents. Officers took photos of the building and part of an adjacent property, where a knife could be seen on the ground behind police tape.

Around noon, first responders directed residents out of the home’s second-floor window using a fire truck’s extended ladder. Police officials said the residents were evacuated that way to avoid a crime scene in the building’s hallway.

Neighbors watching the scene unfold from their porches said the amount of police activity was unusual for their typically quiet street. Many said they didn’t know what happened, but one person described seeing police apprehend a man while a woman was loaded into an ambulance on a stretcher.

Shalom House is a Portland nonprofit that runs group homes and provides residential programs for adults with mental illness.
