Authorities recovered the body of a missing kayaker near the Deer Isle Bridge on Tuesday afternoon.
Jeffrey B. Eaton, 55, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, who is a seasonal resident in Maine, overturned in his kayak shortly after he launched from shore near the end of Wiegand Place on Little Deer Isle on Tuesday morning, the Maine Department of Marine Resources said in a news release.
Family members who witnessed the incident reported it to Maine Marine Patrol at about 10:30 a.m., the department said
Eaton’s body was spotted by a Maine Marine Patrol pilot at about 1:45 p.m. near Deer Isle Bridge and was subsequently recovered from the water near the bridge, the department said. Officials said earlier Tuesday that the bridge, which connects Little Deer Isle to the mainland, had been the focal point of the search.
Eaton’s family was notified and his body was transported to a local funeral home, the department said.
Eaton was not wearing a life jacket or a wetsuit, the Maine Marine Patrol said.
Maine Marine Patrol’s underwater recovery team and an aircraft were used in the search, the department said. The U.S. Coast Guard and Maine State Police also assisted.
