The South Portland City Council unanimously voted Tuesday to send the school board’s recommended budget to voters in June.
Residents will vote on a school budget of $76.2 million, which will involve a 6% increase for taxpayers, on Tuesday, June 9.
All polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. this year, and voters should plan to cast ballots in the locations where they typically vote in a November general election. Absentee ballots can be requested now, and people can vote absentee in person at City Hall from Monday, May 11 through Thursday, June 4.
Many councilors said that this year’s school budget was particularly difficult.
When the school district was faced with cutting $8.4 million to keep the tax increase to 6%, the board voted to close James O. Kaler Elementary School and cut nearly 80 positions as cost-saving efforts.
