Bates College allowed five goals in the final 10 minutes of the game and lost to Hope College, 14-12, in the third round of the NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse tournament on Saturday in Lewiston.

Bates, which earned its first win in the NCAA tournament since 2017 on Friday night, ends the season 12-6. Hope improves to 20-0 and will to face the winner of Sunday’s game between Bowdoin and Stevens.

The Bobcats took an 11-9 lead when Henry McCann scored his third goal of the game 51 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Flying Dutchmen answered with four straight goals. They took the lead on a goal by Jackson Early with 4:21 left and Preston Hoexum made it 13-11 with 1:56 left. Bates pulled within one nine seconds later on a goal by Miles Schmidt, but Weston Godbold put it away with 22 seconds left for Hope.

The Flying Dutchmen took a 1-0 lead 1:15 into the game on a goal by Beckett Monday. Connor Hartman scored with 10:07 left in the first to start a run of four straight for Bates, which lead 3-1 after the first and 7-4 at the half.

Gray Doyle recorded three goals and an assist for Bates. Charlie Hepp added two goals and an assist, while Benjamin Kondner and Jack Goldbach also scored. Andrew Toland made seven saves for the Bobcats.

Hoexum finished with three goals, Gibson Heethius added two goals and five assists, while both Jack Zuiderveen and Weston Godbold had a two goals and an assists for Hope. Jack Balmforth made 11 saves.
