A sushi restaurant in South Portland was damaged in a fire Sunday night.

Makoto Sushi & Grill, located on Cottage Road, will be closed for repairs to its roof and kitchen, according to the city of South Portland.

The fire department responded to an alarm there around 8:30 p.m. People had evacuated the building, and firefighters found heavy smoke inside.

Firefighters put the fire out promptly and there were no injuries, the city reported. Fire Chief Phil Selberg said in a statement Monday that the restaurant’s early notification and alarm system “helped limit the extent of the damage” and ensured safety.

The city is still investigating what caused the fire. A spokesperson said on Monday that it didn’t appear suspicious.
