A 3-year-old boy sustained life-threatening injuries when he was reportedly run over by a riding lawn tractor in Penobscot County on Thursday evening, authorities say.

First responders were called around 6 p.m. to a home on Stetson Road in Kenduskeag, north of Bangor, where a young child was hurt in “an accident involving a lawn tractor,” according to a social media post from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office late Thursday night.

The sheriff’s office provided an update on Friday night.

“Initial reports indicated that a 3-year-old boy had been accidentally run over by a riding lawn tractor and sustained life-threatening injuries,” the sheriff’s office said.

A sheriff’s deputy and local firefighters responded and initiated “lifesaving measures” until the boy could be transported to the hospital, the sheriff’s office said.

The child was taken to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and stabilized, the sheriff’s office said, before being transported by LifeFlight to a Boston-area hospital.

“No additional details regarding the accident will be released at this time,” the sheriff’s office said in its Friday update. “We continue to ask that the public be respectful and mindful of the privacy of this young boy, his family and the first responders who assisted during this tragic incident.”
