Widespread rainfall Friday into Saturday morning in southern Maine is expected to make for some turbulent waters on the coast and inland, prompting authorities to issue a slew of weather advisories.

The National Weather Service’s office in Gray issued several warnings Friday that take effect Saturday morning, including a storm warning for mariners and high surf and wind advisories for those along the southern Maine coast. The Fryeburg area is also facing a flood warning Saturday morning, with rivers and streams expected to rise.

A storm warning for mariners is in effect Saturday from 2 to 11 a.m. for waters from Port Clyde to the Merrimack River in Massachusetts. It says to expect hazardous conditions that could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility.

Seas up to 60 nautical miles offshore could see winds of 25 to 35 knots with gusts up to 50 knots, according to the weather service. The warning advises mariners to either remain in port, alter their course, or secure their vessels for severe conditions.

The high surf advisory for coastal York and Cumberland counties is in effect from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. It warns of large breaking waves of 6 to 9 feet, which the agency says could create dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, as well as localized beach erosion.

The same area also falls under a weather service wind advisory from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, with winds of 20 to 25 mph and gusts up to 50 mph expected.

A flood warning along the Saco River — from Conway, New Hampshire, into southern Oxford County — advises campers along its banks to prepare to seek higher ground Saturday morning.
