South Portland police took a 40-year-old man into custody Wednesday after finding black powder and unidentified substances while searching his residence on Florence Street.
John Flumerfelt was taken into custody after police executed a warrant at the home at 65 Florence Street and discovered the powder and the unidentified substance, according to a press release issued by the police department.
Residents in nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution while the Southern Maine Regional SWAT team, Portland Bomb Squad and the city’s fire department were called to the scene.
The police determined that the area is safe and there is no ongoing threat, according to a press release released by the South Portland Police Department.
Flumerfelt was transported to Cumberland County Jail where he was charged with criminal use of explosives. Additional charges related to firearms remain under investigation, according to the press release.
