Visitors to Buxton Town Hall in the weeks leading up to the June 9 elections might have noticed a recent change near the voting booths. The simple red, white and blue “I Voted” stickers typically granted to residents after casting their ballots now include a Sasquatch image.
A Sasquatch, also known as Bigfoot, is a large, hairy mythical creature said to roam the forests of North America. This particular Sasquatch is filled in with an American flag design and is marching among pine trees over a map of Buxton.
In 2023, Walter Ryan, of Bangor, created a custom design for the city’s “I Voted” stickers featuring the Paul Bunyan statue. The next year, the city of Westbrook commissioned local artist Flynn Costello to design a sticker with a racoon on a red-and-white starry background. Now, Buxton has its own design, too.
Town Clerk John Meyers and Deputy Town Clerk Angela Michie crafted the sticker design.
Besides both occupying rural territories, Buxton and the Sasquatch are largely unrelated. Meyers said the new design is intended to stand out and encourage people to come vote in the local elections and primaries.
“We wanted something that was unique, that might catch people’s attention, that they might want to take home and keep,” he said. The town printed 10,000 of the stickers for $436 in hopes that amount can last through the next three November election cycles. The same number of regular “I Voted” stickers from Walmart would have cost $501.
Buxton Human Resources Director Kim Lefebvre said she and her husband, Chuck Lefebvre, were thrilled to see the Sasquatch design on the stickers. Kim has gifted Chuck a Bigfoot sweatshirt, he has a Bigfoot sticker on the back of his truck and he watches TV programs about Bigfoot. He is undecided on if he believes the creature is real.
“He just thought it was a riot that, of all things, Buxton would pick the Bigfoot to be our mascot,” Kim said, holding up the back of her phone, where she keeps her “I Voted” sticker. “(Myers and Michie) were joking about having a Bigfoot costume and getting a red, white and blue outfit for him to wear and have him here on voting days.”
Residents stopping in at town hall recently admired the enlarged version of the sticker displayed on a pole near the building’s entrance, where Kim said people should take selfies after voting.
“I think it’s great that our town now has a unique sticker. I always bring mine home with me and I’m psyched to get one,” Donna Kovacs said.
“I just think it’s fun, and I’m proud,” Tracy Crump said.
Early voting has begun at Buxton Town Hall and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Voting on Election Day, June 9, is from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
