Charles “Marty” Roop

AUBURN – Charles “Marty” Roop of Auburn passed away on June 30, 2026, in his home at Schooner Estates Independent Living facility.

Marty was born on Aug. 9, 1936, in Eastport, Maine, the son of Charles and Madeline (Richardson) Roop. The family moved around a lot until 1947 when they settled back in Millinocket, Maine, which he considered his hometown. At Stearns High School he played three sports, was in the National Honor Society and attended Dirigo Boys State. He received an Alumni Fund Scholarship to Bowdoin College where he played football and baseball. He was elected president of the class of 1958.

In 1956, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Jane Donley. They were happily married for 68 years. They lived in Lisbon Falls from 1961 to 2023, when they moved to Schooner Estates Independent Living in Auburn.

Marty worked at Farnsworth Woolen Mill in Lisbon Center and Ellis Paperboard (Rock Ten) in Portland/Scarborough. After retiring he worked seasonally at L.L.Bean and part time for his son, Steve, at Roopers Beverage and Redemption and for son, Marty.

Marty was a Member of Holy Trinity Church Prince of Peace Parish and the Slovak Catholic Association (Lower Club). Marty served on the Lisbon School Board and the Lisbon Advisory Board, serving two years as Chairman. He also served on the Credit Union Supervisory Committee, the Marion T. Morse Directors Committee and several Lisbon temporary committees. He also remained active with his Bowdoin College classmates, helping to plan the five-year reunions. Marty was the Grand Marshall of the Moxie Festival Parade in 2025.

Marty loved sports. He played baseball with the Roberts 88ers town team. He coached Little League and American Legion baseball with his good friend and teammate Stan Doughty. He was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010, joining three teammates and the manager of Roberts 88ers.

He helped organize and participated in Adult Sports, including Touch Football, Basketball, Volleyball and Softball until he was 50 years old. He was one of the organizers of the Lisbon Junior Athletic League. He coached intramural fifth and sixth grade basketball for several years in the 1980’s. Marty also enjoyed golf, fishing, gardening and attending high school and college athletic games. He especially loved watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in sports.

After retiring, Marty and Mary Jane took several trips to Europe with friends, visiting 15 countries, creating many special memories. He took a six-day rafting trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon at the age of 70. He saw a good part of the USA on a two-week train trip from Boston through Chicago, Arizona, California, Seattle, Montana, the Dakotas, Illinois and New York—returning to Boston. Along the way he visited family and friends in Arizona and Seattle. Marty and Mary Jane loved going to the Maine State Music Theater for special date nights.

Marty’s life centered around family and friends. He felt very fortunate to have good health, a loving family, wonderful friends and the love of his life Mary Jane. He was also very proud to have lived most of his life in the state of Maine.

Marty is survived by sons Marty Roop (Stephanie) of Cave Creek, Ariz., Lawrence Roop of Lewiston and daughter Kathy Beagan (Michael) of Biddeford. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Stephanie St. Laurent (Jesse), Joseph Roop, Stephen Roop (Sarah), Kelly Roop, Colin Beagan (Camilla), Cameron Beagan, John Roop and Madeline Roop; and great-grandchildren Eli, Alek, Isaak, Julian, Charlotte, Maxwell, Fynn, Bennett and Felix. He is survived by his brother, Joseph Roop (Jolene), sister-in-law Ann Monteith, brother-in-law Michael Donley (Fran); and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, including Woodland Avenue neighbors, Cobbs Pierce Pond friends and Yoke Pond fishing friends.

Marty was predeceased by his parents Charles and Madeline Roop; son, Stephen Roop; grandchildren Sherri Roop and Ian Beagan; brother, David Roop; mother- and father-in-law, Lawrence and Madeline Donley; and by his brothers- and sisters-in-law; and many wonderful friends.

Marty was also grateful for his three years of living at Schooner Estates in Auburn, enjoying their loving staff and the friends he made there.

The family would like to thank all the wonderful Andwell Healthcare hospice staff and private home health care professionals who cared for Marty in his final days. We are so grateful for the love, support and care you provided for our family.

A Funeral Mass honoring Marty’s life will be celebrated on Monday, July 27 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Parish in Lisbon. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 26 from 2 to 6 p.m. at The Fortin & Pinette Group, 217 Turner St. in Auburn, 783-8545.
