CAPE ELIZABETH — Barbara A. Hughes, 86, of Cape Elizabeth, died May 22.
Hughes was born in South Portland on Nov. 16, 1928, to Harry Spencer Royles and Maude Lyndel Cunningham Royles.
She attended South Portland schools, and spent memorable childhood summers on Peaks Island.
After graduating high school in 1946, she worked for New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. in its revenue accounting office.
In 1951, she married Lee Stephen Hughes. Together they raised a daughter, Ann, and a son, Stephen, in Cape Elizabeth.
Barbara attended St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, bowled with the Cape Clippers, and devoted herself to many volunteer activities, including helping at the Women’s Exchange and serving as the leader of Girl Scout Troop No. 26.
She was predeceased by Lee in 1995; three brothers, Ivory, Edgar and Thomas Royles; and three sisters, Iola Violette, June Irvin and Helen Tetreault.
Hughes is survived by her daughter, Ann Hughes Connellan; her son, Stephen and wife, Carol, of Scarborough; four grandchildren, Laura Hughes, of Scarborough, Stephanie Petersen, of Portland, Oregon, J. Joseph Connellan, of Austin, Texas, and Kate Connellan Lane, of Wellington, Florida; four great-grandchildren, Anna, Emma, Cara and Henry; and a special niece, Carol Violette Hurd.
A funeral was held May 27 at Hobbs Funeral Home, in South Portland. A graveside service was scheduled for 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, at Forest City Cemetery, in South Portland.
