The Westbrook football team showed much improvement during their recently completed fall season improving on their 1-7 mark from a year ago to finish 3-5.

The Blue Blazes began their campaign with a convincing 34-6 win over Portland on opening night. Joel Chadbourne had three touchdowns in Westbrook’s first victory over the Bulldogs since 1992.

Following the win over Portland, the Blazes dropped four straight to Deering, Cheverus, Bonny Eagle and Thornton Academy. Three of those teams reached the playoffs. But Westbrook rebounded and won two of their last three games with a 34-18 win over South Portland and a 20-7 victory over Windham.

Field Hockey

The Blue Blazes field hockey team earned the eighth seed for the Western Maine tourney by virtue of their 8-5-1 regular season record.

The Blazes got off to a bit of a slow start dropping three straight after winning their season opener. Two of those losses were by a single goal, with the other a 3-1 loss to Gorham.

After the skid was over, the Blazes ripped off four wins in five games. Those wins came at the expense of Marshwood, McAuley, Portland and Thornton Academy. They then tied Windham 2-2.

After a loss to Bonny Eagle, the Blazes won their final three games of the regular season to gain some momentum for the playoffs. They won their preliminary round game 3-0 over Noble before being stopped by eventual Western Maine champion Sanford in the quarterfinals.

Boys Soccer

The boys’ soccer team made it to the quarterfinals of this year’s tournament where they were ousted by Scarborough. The Blue Blazes entered the tourney as the No. 8 seed thanks to their 8-4-2 record.

The Blazes went unbeaten in their first five games with a 4-0-1 mark. They knocked off Bonny Eagle, Windham, Massabesic and Cheverus and tied with South Portland. That setup a battle of unbeatens with Scarborough, where Westbrook lost its first game of the year.

From there, the Blazes went on to lose only three more regular season games to Deering, Gorham and Kennebunk against three more wins.

In the playoffs they dispatched Thornton Academy in the first round before being knocked out by the Red Storm.

Girls Soccer

Last year the girls’ soccer team made it to the playoffs, but this year the team never found any consistency and finished out of the running with a 1-11-2 record.

Things began well enough with two ties through four games with all the games close. But a team can only lose so many one-goal games before it finds itself out of contention. This season, the Blazes lost seven games by two goals or less with four of those one-goal games.

The Blazes lone win came in their final game of the season, a 4-3 win over Kennebunk. Karly Gaudreau scored the game-winner to break a 3-3 tie with just eight minutes to play. Chelsea Preston added two goals and Amanda Northrop also scored for Westbrook in that game.

Golf

The Blue Blazes golf team picked up two wins in their 10 match season. Both came against South Portland. The first time the teams met, Westbrook won 8-5. The second time around, the Blazes took it in a rout 11.5-1.5.

The Blazes began the year with three straight losses to Portland, Cheverus and Deering before their first win over the Red Riots. They then lost five in a row before defeating South Portland in their final match of the year.

Cross Country

The boys cross country team didn’t pick up any meet wins but had some good individual performances. Shiquan James was the top Westbrook finisher in all four regular season meets. On September 28 against Portland James won with a time of 18:02.

James was the top finisher in the Western Maine Regional coming in at number 71 with teammate Glenn Emery finishing right behind him.

The girls managed to pick up one win during their season against Portland. Just like the boys, the girls turned in some strong individual performances despite their overall record.

Jackye Cote, Megan Cutter and Keelin O’Connor were the top performers for the Blazes often finishing together in the standings. Cutter and Cote each picked up one race win. Cutter’s came against Marshwood, South Portland and Thornton Academy. Cote’s was against Portland.

Cutter paced the Blazes in the Western Maine Regional with a ninth place effort. She was strong a week later in the state meet where she placed 26th.
