WESTBROOK – A New Year’s Eve fire damaged a home on Brook Street in Westbrook.

According to Capt. Peter Mullin of the Westbrook Fire Department, the two-alarm fire caused “substantial” damage to the home at 422 Brook St., though he said the damage appeared to be repairable.

The fire was reported at about 9:30 p.m. and escalated to two alarms. Mullin said that the cause of the fire appeared to be an electrical malfunction, and he added that it did not appear to be suspicious.

Mullin said that two people were home at the time of the fire and that one of the occupants was evaluated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation. There were no other injuries, he said.

Mullin said the Red Cross was assisting the occupants of the home, as the home was not habitable after the blaze.

According to Mullin, crews from the Portland, Falmouth and Windham fire departments assisted Westbrook firefighters at the scene. He said crews from the Scarborough and Gorham fire departments provided station coverage for Westbrook while crews were battling the fire.

“We got a lot of help from our neighbors,” he said.
