Bonny Eagle students study ice fishing, lake

A group of seventh-grade students from Bonny Eagle Middle School visited Sebago Lake in mid-March to study ice fishing and the importance of the lake in their lives.

Maine Guide Rex Turner accompanied the students along with chaperones Connie Regula, Mark Andreasen, Jeff Myrick, Donna Bilodeau and David Swan.

After the trip to the lake, seventh-grade teacher Mark Norton interviewed some of the students about what they did and what they learned.

“We learned about Sebago Lake and how the people of the Greater Portland area depend on it for their drinking water. We tested how clean the water is. We also set up our ice fishing traps,” Dylan Gammon, Corey Hanson and Jeff Myrick said.

Jessica Avery said she learned how to ice fish and about the fish that are native to Sebago. Brooke VanRosendael peered through binoculars into the water and told about cooking hot dogs.

Alicia Hoyt said the students learned about ice fishing and tested depth of the water.

Riley Heroux learned about the history of the lake, various water regulations and that the ice could hold several trucks. Because of the cold weather, Emma Goff said she enjoyed eating lunch on the bus.

The trip was a learning experience and fun for the students as well. “I enjoyed taking the actual time to ice fish, even though I didn’t catch any fish. It was really fun.” Avery said.

Heroux and a friend were in charge of taking pictures and videos and Gammon enjoyed being in the fresh air and watching the birds fly around.

Bonny Eagle is one of 12 Maine schools of the Maine Lakes Conservancy Institute. It’s a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to understanding, protecting and sustaining the health and values of Maine’s lakes and the communities dependent upon them.
