Gorham planners have received a revised plan from McDonald’s for a restaurant at the site of a vacant gas station, while an aspiring gubernatorial candidate hopes to lease it as a campaign headquarters.
Town officials in the past have deemed the vacant gas station at 109 Main St as an eyesore and hoped the site would be re-developed. The dilapidated, two-bay gas station is at the gateway to Gorham village at the intersection of Main Street and New Portland Road.
According to Gorham tax records, AMG Investments LLC, of Bowdoin owns the property at 109 Main St., and its assessed value is $311,000.
After a proposal for a McDonald’s restaurant last year didn’t meet the town’s design standards, a Massachusetts engineering firm has updated its site plan. Gorham received the latest design proposal on July 17.
“This site plan looks a whole lot better,” Gorham Zoning Administrator David Galbraith said Tuesday. “We require a traditional New England style.”
Galbraith said the style would include a gabled roof, clapboard siding and lots of windows. Gorham has responded to the latest proposed design submitted by John Kucich of Bohler Engineering in Southborough, Mass., and the town is waiting for the engineering firm to ask for a meeting.
“It would be a fabulous location for them,” Galbraith said.
It is unclear the number of customers the restaurant would seat.
Meanwhile, Sam Bailey, a Gorham resident, who plans a run as an independent gubernatorial candidate, hopes to lease the old gas station for a campaign headquarters. On Tuesday, Bailey said he planned to meet this week with the owner of the vacant station.
“It needs a lot of fixing up,” said Bailey, an investment adviser.
But, he said, “all roads lead to that building. It’s surrounded by traffic.”
Bailey, who mounted a gubernatorial bid in 2010 but didn’t get on the ballot, is interested in a two-year lease on the old gas station.
Loren Goodridge of AMG, who owns a number of Subway restaurants, could not be reached for comment on Tuesday.
