Portland’s Junior Legion team falls short in Northeast Regional championship game
Kevin Stone took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with 12 strikeouts and one walk while throwing a three-hitter to lead Stamford, Conn., to a 7-1 win over Bruno’s in the championship game of the Junior Legion Baseball Northeast Regional at Cranston, R.I.
Bruno’s run came on a solo homer by Nick DiPalma in the top of the sixth inning.
JUNIOR LEGION STATE TOURNAMENT: Sunday’s game between Fairfield and Tri-Town was postponed. The teams will play at 1 p.m. Monday at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham.
Fairfield can clinch the championship with a win. If Tri-Town wins, a second game will be played immediately after the first game.
GOLF
LPGA: So Yeon Ryu rode a string of six straight birdies in the middle of her round to a 9-under 62 and a seven-stroke victory in the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic in Sylvania, Ohio.
Ryu, 22, began the day in the midst of a four-player logjam — all South Koreans — for first place.
Angela Stanford made a long birdie putt on the final hole for 66 to finish second.
U.S. WOMEN’S AMATEUR: Lydia Ko beat Jaye Marie Green 3 and 1 in the final at The Country Club in Cleveland.
Ko, a South Korean-born New Zealander who tops the world amateur rankings, won at age 15 years, 3 months to become the second-youngest winner in tournament history. Kimberly Kim was 14 years, 11 months old when she won the 2006 tournament.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
DEATH: Officials in Charleston County, S.C., said a 30-year-old fighter from Georgia died after a bout in Mount Pleasant.
Deputy Coroner Dottie Lindsay says Tyrone Mims of Augusta, Ga., collapsed after the fight and was pronounced dead about 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Medical University Hospital. The cause of death is not yet known.
TENNIS
ROGERS CUP: Top-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia won his second straight men’s title and third overall, beating Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-2 at Toronto.
American brothers Bob and Mike Bryan, fresh off their Olympic gold medal, won the doubles title with a 6-1, 4-6 (12-10) victory over Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez.
• Tenth-seeded Li Na rallied to beat 16th-seeded Lucie Safarova 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the women’s final at Montreal against fifth-seeded Petra Kvitova, a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 winner over seventh-seeded Caroline Wozniacki.
SOCCER
MLS: Sanna Nyassi scored in the 61st minute to help the visiting Montreal Impact beat the New England Revolution, 1-0.
Montreal (10-13-3) has won four of its last five games.
New England (6-12-5) suffered its ninth shutout loss of the season.
