Residents of Larrabee Village in Westbrook hope a special guest at their annual fundraiser this fall will help bring in the money they need for a new bus.
Staff from Westbrook Housing and the residents of the elderly housing complex recently produced a video, which they sent to comedienne Ellen DeGeneres, asking her to make an appearance at Westbrook Services Corporation’s Fourth Annual Senior Dreams Golf Benefit.
With an introduction by Michelle York, supportive services coordinator for Westbrook Housing, the video features the elderly and disabled residents attempting to push their old broken-down bus, needless to say, to no avail.
Nicole Nappi, activities coordinator for Westbrook Housing, said DeGeneres’ popularity with the residents of Larrabee Village gave her the idea to make the video.
“A lot of our residents watch her and think she’s a riot,” she said. “We knew it was sort of a long shot, but we thought we’d try.”
The event, which benefits senior and disabled residents who live in buildings managed by Westbrook Housing, will be held on Sept. 12 at Sable Oaks Golf Course in South Portland. They hope DeGeneres’ presence at their fundraiser will generate enough publicity to bring in the money to replace their broken-down bus, which would transport them to activities like grocery shopping, plays and fairs.
Previously, the residents got around in a handicapped-accessible 14-passenger minibus, but the 14-year-old vehicle broke down several times this winter, leaving the seniors stranded around town.
According to John Gallagher, executive director of Westbrook Housing, nearly half of the residents don’t have cars.
“It’s just a way for them to get out,” said Nappi.
