The New England Press Association has awarded several honors to four Current Publishing Co. journalists in its annual Better Newspaper Contest.

Mike Higgins, sports editor, and Katie Bell, graphic artist, took first place in the Sports Page or Section category with their 2008 spring sports preview.

American Journal reporter Leslie Bridgers won first place in the Social Issues Feature Story category for her story on the Westbrook Police Department’s efforts to combat a growing drug problem, which appeared in the March 13, 2008, edition.

Former Current Publishing photographer Harmony Motter won third place in the Personality Photo category for her photo of a Civil War re-enactor.

“I’m lucky to be working with reporters, editors, graphic designers and photographers that do great work every week,” said Current Publishing Executive Editor Brendan Moran. “It’s nice to see some of them recognized for work that stood out among some of the best newspapers in New England.”

The awards were handed out Feb. 7 at the association’s annual banquet at the Park Plaza Hotel in Boston.

The New England Press Association promotes growth and excellence in New England newspapers through technology, networking, education and recognition among its members. Founded in 1950, the association currently has 595 member newspapers.

Based in Westbrook, Current Publishing Co. publishes six weekly newspapers covering Cumberland and York counties – Current, American Journal, Lakes Region Weekly, Sun Chronicle, Reporter and Weekly Observer. The company also publishes specialty magazines, including Food Etc., My Generation and Maine Women.
