Sullivan award
Sally Plourde, second-grade teacher at Prides Corner School and president of the Westbrook Education Association, was recently honored as this year’s recipient of the Catherine Sullivan Award.
The award is given each year to a dedicated and involved member of the Westbrook Education Association. Catherine Sullivan was on hand for the presentation.
Usher earns degree
Christie Lynn Usher, 22, recently graduated from Saint Anselm’s College in Manchester, N.H.
A dean’s list student, Usher, earned a degree in environmental science. She graduated from Westbrook High School in 2005.

The Westbrook Historical Society museum will be open 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesdays and Saturdays at its headquarters, 17 Dunn St., throughout the summer.
The public is welcome and admission is free.
Vallee stories sought
Those who have stories about Rudy Vallee are urged to submit them to the Westbrook Historical Society, 17 Dunn St.
Mayor Bruce Chuluda will rededicate Rudy Vallee Square at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 25. Vallee’s widow, Eleanor Vallee of California, will attend the ceremony.
Vallee, who grew up in Westbrook, was a crooner and musician who became a radio, stage and screen star. He died July 3, 1986, and is buried in St. Hyacinth’s Cemetery on Stroudwater Street.
Stories submitted about Vallee will be included in a book for Eleanor Vallee. The stories can be dropped off, mailed or forwarded by e-mail to [email protected].
Seniors hitting
the road
Westbrook Senior Citizens have two upcoming trips.
The group will travel to Foxwoods in Connecticut on Wednesday, June 17.
On Sunday, July 12, they will go to Maine’s Cabbage Island for a lobster-chicken bake. For more information, call 854-2292 or 854-2705.
Sullivan Tire
honors Keith
Sullivan Tire recently announced that nine members of its team recently completed their exams and earned master technician status.
The nine include Westbrook resident Matthew Keith.
To earn the status, the employees had to pass a group of eight tasks testing their expertise in several areas of car repair and maintenance. The test is administered by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.
Keith and the other eight were recently honored by Sullivan Tire at a special ceremony in Danvers, Mass. “We’re very proud of these individuals,” said Sullivan Tire Vice President Paul Sullivan. “Every employee in the company is dedicated to constantly improving their expertise and knowledge of the industry, allowing us to deliver unparalleled service.”
Happy trails
Prides Corner Elementary School is looking for a few extra hands to help at its second family trail-building day.
Two bridges have already been built along the school’s new nature trail, but there’s still more work to be done.
To help out, show up at Prides Corner Elementary School on Saturday, June 13, at 10 a.m.
Flag Day
American Legion Post 62 is celebrating Flag Day with a ceremony, gathering at the Veterans’ Circle in Riverbank Park at 7 p.m. Sunday.
A proclamation will be read, the Star-Spangled banner sung and poetry presented, between opening and closing prayers led by a chaplain. To participate in the ceremony, call Ed Senechal at 854-8826.
