Westbrook police responded Monday afternoon to a reported robbery and aggravated assault around 79 North St.

The victim was a 24-year-old refugee living in Portland who was beaten in an apparent effort by the suspect to steal money from him. The victim was transported to Maine Medical Center by the Westbrook ambulance and was being treated for his injuries. The name of the victim is being withheld pending further investigation.

Westbrook police continue to interview witnesses, including the female resident of North Street where the robbery and assault occurred.

Police are actively pursuing leads to the identity of the suspect.
