Buxton students aid pumpkin fundraiser

Students at Jack Memorial School in Buxton carved pumpkins for Saturday’s Maine Pumpkin Festival, a fundraiser for Camp Sunshine, held at Cumberland Fairgrounds.

Camp Sunshine on Sebago Lake in Casco provides respite, support, joy and hope for children with life-threatening illnesses.

The year-round program at the camp is free of charge to all families.

The Pumpkin Festival began in Deering Oaks Park in Portland in 2003 as a fundraiser for Camp Sunshine.

In 2006, the festival was in Boston, where it smashed the Guinness World Record for the most lit jack-o-lanterns at one place at one time The camp was attempting to break its own record of 30,128 lit jack-o’-lanterns that was set at Boston. Volunteers managed to light just over 23,000 pumpkins falling short of the goal but a Camp Sunshine director said no matter the result, the event was more about raising funds and awareness for the camp than about setting a record.
