Autumn in Maine is so beautiful. The leaves are turning, the air is crisp and there are signs popping up everywhere that indicate that an election is right around the corner. I mean political signs. I know there has been much debate around the clutter of these signs, but pause a moment to think of what they represent.

Signs represent candidates working very hard for your vote. Signs are not just put out wherever it is convenient. People running for office ask permission of the landowner to place a sign on their property, which generally means that the homeowner supports that candidate. I appreciate the time it takes for these individuals to gather permission and endorsement to place the signs, as well as to take care of the signs when the wind or weather gets the better of them.

Along with the signs are the door-to-door visiting neighborhoods that many of the candidates are doing. Going from house to house to deliver a biographic card on themselves to better inform the voting public about who they are and what they represent to serve you the residents of Westbrook. Again, candidates working hard for your vote.

I, for one, really appreciate the time and commitment that all elected officials put in for the betterment of our community. Please look around at the signs, the flyers and the candidates and their families who are knocking on your door to ask for your support on Nov. 6. And please go out and vote for the people that are working hard for you.
