For their meetings in May and June, memers will be donating and gathering many items that the shelter is in need of to help animals. Ida Dugas has volunteered to deliver what is gathered.

Some of the items needed are baking soda, dishwashing detergent, paper towels, laundry detergent, night lights for kennels and cat rooms, blankets, towels, comforters, large plastic bowls, toys, cream cheese and smooth peanut butter for treats and other items.

Honors for city woman

A University of Maine at Presque Isle senior has been named one of two students in Maine to receive a prestigious honor for physical education majors.

Julie Wescott will receive an Eastern District Outstanding Future Professional Award from the Eastern District Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. She was among eight students in Maine nominated for the award. Wescott is among a small handful of students in the district – which stretches from Maine to Maryland to the Virgin Islands – to receive the award.

She also is in the running for the national Outstanding Future Professional Award, presented by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Wescott, who is completing her student teaching this semester, is the daughter of Denise and (the late) Dennis Wescott of Naples and the granddaughter of Elmer and Gloria Welch of Westbrook
