Girls Track

Winter 2004-05 Record: Second in WMC, state Class B runner-up

Key veterans: Kathryn Cyr (senior, jumps and 400), Johannah O’Malley (senior, distance), Kristi Hall (senior, mid-distance), Tammie Arsenault (junior, shot put), Katie Bola (junior, pole vault), Leigh Maniscalco (sophomore, jumps, hurdles and pole vault), Alyson Fearon (sophomore, sprints) and Samantha Owens (sophomore, jumps)

Key newcomers: Sarah Popovics (senior, distance) and several freshmen

Key concern: “Lack of numbers in the senior division.”

Coach’s outlook: “Gorham graduated a large number of scorers from last year’s Class B state runner-up, but returns solid scorers Leigh Maniscalco (defending class B pole vault state champion), Kathryn Cyr and Alyson Fearon. We also added Sarah Popovics in the distance events. Gorham should be very competive in the SMAA. We may lack the overall numbers to beat large, talented teams like Scarborough, Thornton Academy and Deering during league meets, but Gorham should be very competitive in the state meet, when their strength in the jumps comes through.”

Boys Track

Key newcomers: “Many new athletes are trying the sport for the first time from freshmen to seniors. A total of 74 athletes have signed up for the team.”

Key concern: “Hope we can cover all of the events in our first season in the SMAA with its different format.”

Coach’s outlook: “Would like to be competitive in our first season in Class A.”

Girls Hockey

Coach: Chris Bowring (second year)

Winter 2004-05 Record: 5-9-2

How did last season end: “Lost to Winslow in the quarterfinals”

Key veterans: Becky Muller, senior captain on defense; Kasey Gallant, junior captain on defense; Hilary Innes, junior forward and Molly Stelmack, senior forward

Key newcomers: Freshmen Caitlin Caldwell at forward and Ashley Martin on defense

Key concern: “We didn’t play any tier one teams last year. Because of the reorganization of Maine girls ice hockey has gone to regions instead of tiers, we will be playing tier one and two teams.”

Coach’s outlook: “We should do well this season. We have 14 skaters on the varsity team and 11 of those played last year. These girls know the systems already and can now expand on them. We have a JV team this year with 11 skaters.”

Coach: Eric Wales: (first season)

Winter 2004-05 Record: 5-10-1

How did last season end: “One position from making class B playoffs.”

Key veterans: Seniors Mark Schmidt and Matt Caldwell; juniors Alex Dahms and Chris Roop

Key newcomers: Sophomore Brendan Ryan and freshman David Gushee

Key concern: “We will need improvements in the transitional zone from defense to offensive.”

Coach’s outlook: “With our move to class A hockey, we look for a very competitive season. Within our 19 game schedule we will have a total of 16 new opponents that we have not played in the past. With the returning group of upperclassmen and the key addition of several new underclassmen we will work to obtain our goal of qualifying for the western Maine class A playoffs.”

Alpine Skiing

Coach: Greg Prince (first year)

Coach’s outlook: “Our team is mostly made up of skiers new to ski racing. My goal is to have the skiers challenge themselves week to week and have fun with the sport of ski racing. In the end, I think they will all see their ski ability elevated.”

Boys Basketball

Coach: Kevin Jenkins (22nd year)

Winter 2004-05 Record: 19-3

How did last season end: “Western B Champions for fifth time in last six years.”

Key veterans: Seniors Jeff Manchester, Josh Tanguay, Max Bass, Matt Trask, Rob Connolly, Colin Hurd and Craig Woodbrey

Key newcomers: Juniors Andrew Dean, Adam MacDonald, Kyle Egbert, Spencer Seiferth and sophomore Mike Foustoukos

Key concern: “Preseason injuries to Matt Trask (broken bone in foot) and Andrew Dean (tendon in thumb); replacing four excellent players from last year (starters Ben Thayer, Keegan Ballantyne, John MacKenzie and reserve Joel Leconte); transitioning smoothly to a frontloaded class A schedule.”

Coach’s outlook: “When healthy, we should be one of the state’s top teams despite losing three starters from last year. Deering and Cheverus return the bulk of their players from last year’s strong teams, including several Div. 1 players and should be favored. Portland has loads of talent, and Marshwood returns a fine team. We should be in the mix by tournament time.”

Girls Basketball

Coach: Sherry Coyne (third season)

Winter 2004-05 Record: 13-7

How did last season end: “Despite having a record of 13-7 and the defeats of quality opponents throughout the season, our postseason run was ended when Yarmouth scored more baskets in the quarterfinals at the Augusta Civic Center. It was an exciting run, and it was a good season. We may have fallen short point-wise, but nowhere else. Those young ladies should be proud, they gave it their all (left it on the floor, had no regrets) and that was all that we ever ask of our athletes at GHS.”

Key veterans: Emily Jenkins, Ashley Seiler, Nicole Robitaille, Kelsey Wilson, Caitlyn Butterfield and Ashley Michaud

Key newcomers: Chrissy Nealey, Alison Feibel, Emma Deans, Athena Beaulieu, Chantell Tijssen, Luci Pike, Lindsey Hansen and Rachele Burns

Key concern: “SIZE! Though… I am not sure that size matters when it comes to heart and desire!”

Coach’s outlook: “Our offense will be our defense. We will be an exciting team to watch!”

Cheerleading

Coach: Kate Loveless (third year)

Winter 2004-05 Record: Western Maine regional

runners-up and state runners-up

Key veterans: Corrie Brown, Kayla Thibodeau, Allysha Jones and Chanelle Hallsworth

Key newcomers: Brit Herring, Corey Perkins, Sarah Graff and Chandra Wilson

Key concern: “Graduated eight seniors last year and have a very young team this year – no seniors and only one junior. The move to class A is going to be tough, there are a number of great teams.”

Coach’s outlook: “We hope to make it to the state championship. Six teams from the west will make it.”
