Scarborough 15

Gorham 6

Lindsay Hagerman scored four goals to lead the Scarborough girls’ lacrosse team past Gorham Monday afternoon, 15-6. Natalie Cahoon tallied three goals for the visitors with Ellie Morin and Sarah Bonefant each adding a pair. Kayla Nielson led Gorham with three goals.

The game was tight early on with the teams trading goals. The Rams drew first blood just over a minute into the game. Just 15 seconds later, the Red Storm tied the game at a goal apiece. With 16:57 to go, Scarborough took their first lead of the game. But, as before, the lead didn’t last long. The Rams tied the game at two just 17 seconds later.

Hagerman gave Scarborough the lead for good with 1:50 to go in the half with a zigzagging move to the net. One minute later, the Storm had some breathing room for the first time when Megan Cowie dumped the ball into the net for a 4-2 lead. With 9:06 to go in the half, Gorham scored again to make it a 4-3 game. That led Scarborough head coach Marcia Wood to call a timeout.

“We had a little bit of a slow start,” Wood said. “We’ve had that against teams this year to kind of see what they can do. Once I called that timeout, they came back and got it together a little better. I feel like I’ve been saying the same thing every timeout and every halftime. It comes down to who wants it. If you want it, you play harder. The team that wants it is going to win. You have to go harder after the ground balls and make accurate passes.”

Following the timeout, the Storm poured it on.

Hagerman scored again just over 30 seconds after the timeout with a move around the Gorham defense. Just over a minute later, Ellie Morin backed her way to the goal and fired a shot into the mesh for a 6-3 Scarborough lead.

Another 20 seconds passed and Hagerman tallied another goal with a hard shot. The flurry of goals flowing the timeout gave the Red Storm a 7-3 lead. Scarborough scored three more times in the first half to take a 10-3 lead into the break.

“We’ve been pretty fortunate with transitions,” Wood said. “But Gorham did a great job marking tight, so it was hard to get some of those off, I have some speed in the midfield, so we used that to run the ball up the field if nothing was open. I had some girls playing very smart. Erin McElwain was playing smart hanging back for a pass if people got stuck on the sideline and they did better at staying spread out.”

Nielson scored early in the second half to make it a 10-4 score. But another flurry of Scarborough goals put to rest any thoughts of a Rams comeback. The Storm scored three goals 48 seconds to pull out to a commanding 13-4 lead before going on to a 15-6 win.

The Rams never could mount an offensive charge. They managed to get several quality scoring chances, but Scarborough goalkeeper Lily Parenteau was up to the task as she has been all year.

“She has been playing very well,” Wood said. “She has kept us in these games and has come up very big. She always has at least 10 saves a game. I know she will be on and she will do a great job. If the defense has a lapse then I know she’s got it so she has been remarkable this year.”

Gorham fell to 5-6 with the loss. The Red Storm improved to 9-2 as they continue to hold the top spot in the Heal Points.
